The government will review a petition from citizens proposing to block songs in the Russian language on streaming platforms in Ukraine.
The petition was published on the "Electronic Petitions" page. The collection of signatures began on Monday, February 17, and by Friday, February 21, over 28,000 citizens had voted in favor of this proposal (the minimum required number of votes is 25,000).
The petition states that Russian-language music may carry propaganda or contain contexts that contradict the values of Ukraine's independence. Furthermore, the authors emphasized that individuals who listen to Russian-language music are indirectly funding the war that Russia is waging against Ukraine.
“Russian-language music can convey ideas and messages that harm Ukrainian identity and foster negative attitudes towards our state…
Every time Ukrainians listen to Russian music, they contribute to the financing of the aggressor. The money earned by Russian artists from the listening of their music goes into the Russian budget, and part of it is used to fund military actions, including missiles that kill Ukrainians…
Songs in Russian, even when performed by Ukrainian or European artists, may include elements of Russian propaganda or carry contexts that contradict the values of Ukraine's independence. In such circumstances, allowing their distribution is dangerous,” the petition text states.
It is also noted that a ban on Russian-language music would aid in the development and promotion of Ukrainian music.
In light of the above, Ukrainians are asking the government to:
- Block songs in the Russian language on streaming platforms such as Apple Music, Spotify, and others, regardless of the nationality of the artist.
- Introduce relevant legislative initiatives to implement this ban.
- Conduct informational campaigns that promote Ukrainian music and culture to support national identity.
