On January 9, a 9-year-old child was admitted to a medical facility in Novy Buh with a hand injury resulting in traumatic amputation of fingers.
Medical staff reported the incident to the police, according to the communications department of the Mykolaiv region police.
Police investigators determined that the child, while alone at his father's house, discovered an explosive device, picked it up, and then an explosion occurred.
Currently, the boy is in the hospital.
At the scene, police explosives experts found and seized fragments, parts, and the detonated safety lever of a modified hand grenade fuse known as the Unified Manual Grenade Fuse (UMGF).
According to the boy’s father, he found the device on the outskirts of the village and brought it home.
In connection with this incident, the investigative units of police station No. 1 of the Bashtanka district police have initiated criminal proceedings under Article 128 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for "Careless serious or moderate bodily harm" and part 1 of Article 263 for "Illegal handling of weapons, military supplies, or explosives." The sanctions of these articles provide for punishment of up to seven years in prison.
Investigative actions are ongoing.
