The war in Ukraine is no longer at a stalemate, as the Russian offensive is steadily gaining momentum, and pessimism is growing in both Kyiv and Washington. According to the New York Times, the main issue for Ukraine right now is the number of soldiers, as American military and intelligence officials believe there are enough personnel for only 6 to a maximum of 12 months of war.

"The Ukrainian army is struggling to recruit soldiers and equip new units. The number of its soldiers killed in combat is around 57,000. This is half of Russia's losses, but still significant for a much smaller country," the NYT reports.

At the same time, some American officials believe that if U.S. support for Ukraine remains strong until next summer, Kyiv may have an opportunity to exploit the weaknesses and anticipated shortages of soldiers and tanks in Russia.

Meanwhile, in the summer, U.S. analysts argued that Russia was unlikely to achieve significant success in Ukraine in the coming months. However, this assessment turned out to be incorrect, according to the NYT. In October, Russia captured more territory in Ukraine than in any other month in the past two years and reclaimed over a third of the territory that Ukrainian forces had taken during an unexpected offensive in the Kursk region.

Currently, some American intelligence agencies and military officials view Ukraine's ability to halt the Russian advance with pessimism.

"It is very tough on the front right now," said Yevgeny Strokhan, a senior lieutenant and commander of a combat drone platoon in the 206th territorial defense battalion. "There is a shortage of everything, there are few people, the Russians are more numerous, and they have more weapons."

Earlier this year, Ukrainian troops faced a shortage of ammunition due to delays in U.S. aid. However, American military officials now state that weapon supplies are no longer Ukraine's main deficiency; the greatest shortfall currently is troops:

"According to one official's estimate, Ukraine has enough soldiers to fight for another six to twelve months. After that, he said, the country will face a severe personnel shortage."
