Ukraine may concede territory in exchange for security guarantees, — WP
The possibility that Ukraine might give up part of its territory in return for Western security guarantees is becoming increasingly likely.
This is reported by The Washington Post, as noted by Focus.
"The prospect of Ukraine compromising with Russia—ceding territory in exchange for certain Western security guarantees—is becoming easier to imagine. This would lead to an unhappy peace that would destabilize European politics for years," the article states.
Journalists explained that the Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump appears to support such a scenario, while his advisors openly state that all efforts should be focused on countering China.
The Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris may also feel compelled to adopt a more submissive stance, particularly because American voters are generally less interested in having their country assert itself excessively on the world stage.
The authors of the article emphasized that hopes for an absolute victory for Ukraine are fading, as the Armed Forces of Ukraine are losing ground on the front lines and support from Western partners is diminishing. All of this could lead to a scenario where Russia significantly achieves its goals as early as next year.
"Western industry cannot produce anything close to the amount of artillery shells needed by Ukraine. The U.S. cannot provide enough air defense systems for both Israel and Ukraine while maintaining a sufficient stock for a potential war with China. And, above all, NATO cannot supply more soldiers to Ukraine," explained analyst Anatol Lieven.
Journalists also noted that in 2022, the U.S. and European partners viewed the fight for Ukraine as an existential clash between the ideologies of democracy and authoritarianism; however, judging by recent trends, this "flame is dying down."
