Ukraine is ready to take Hungary's place in the EU and NATO, says the Foreign Ministry
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes that Ukraine is prepared to occupy the vacant spot in the European Union and NATO if Hungary decides to relinquish it in favor of membership in the CIS and CSTO.
This statement is made in an announcement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
"The latest manipulative statements from the Hungarian leadership regarding Ukraine's decision not to extend the transit agreement with the aggressor state, Russia, from 2025, supposedly having a negative impact on consumer prices, are part of a politically motivated information campaign for domestic consumption," the statement reads.
In particular, the Foreign Ministry reminded that in a statement from January 1, 2025, the European Commission clearly noted that Ukraine's previously announced decision did not negatively affect the energy security of EU countries or consumer prices in the European market.
"The sole reason for problems in Europe's energy market has always been Russia. For decades, the Kremlin has used energy as a weapon, blackmailing European governments and undermining energy security. With the onset of full-scale aggression against Ukraine, Russia has become an existential threat to stability and peace on the European continent. Consequently, the era of Europe's dependence on Russian energy resources is coming to an end," the statement highlights.
Furthermore, the European Commission and European governments are successfully collaborating to diversify supply sources and increase energy independence. All European countries have found ways to secure their economies and citizens with alternative energy resources from the USA and the Middle East.
"Only two out of twenty-seven EU countries have failed to accomplish this task, and are now trying to shift their problems from a sick head to a healthy one," the statement notes.
At the same time, as stated in the announcement, by attempting to maintain dependence on Russia against common sense, these two countries are also effectively obstructing access to the European energy market from the USA and other partners.
"If Hungary prioritizes strengthening ties with Russia over the EU and the USA, it should openly acknowledge this. Ukraine will be ready to take the vacant spot in the EU and NATO if Hungary decides to free it for membership in the CIS or CSTO. However, if Hungary genuinely wishes to help end the war, it should start by not undermining unity within the EU and instead strengthen energy security and independence for its own country and citizens alongside the rest of Europe and the USA," the statement concludes.
