At the beginning of his address, he acknowledged all former presidents present at the ceremony and then declared the start of a "golden era" for America. He also mentioned that over the past eight years, he faced "trials and challenges" more than any president in U.S. history.

"My life was saved for a reason. I was saved by God to make America great again. I will be the person who establishes peace around the world. I will measure strength not only by the battles we have won but by the wars we have ended. My greatest legacy will be that of a peacemaker and unifier," Trump stated.

• Donald Trump promised that today, January 20, he would sign a series of historic presidential orders.
• He pledged to declare a state of emergency at the southern border (the U.S.-Mexico border) and initiate "the process of returning millions of criminal aliens to where they came from."
