“He’s doing well, but now we’re in trouble”: how a Ukrainian colonel reacted to the spat between Zelensky and Trump, - Time

American journalist Simon Shuster shared how he and a colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine learned about the conflict between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump on February 28.

This information is detailed in Shuster's column in Time, published on Saturday, March 1.

The journalist stated that the Ukrainian colonel was surprised, but after a few minutes, he remarked that Zelensky was “doing well.”

“I rarely hear an officer praise their commander-in-chief. But he seemed genuinely impressed. 'He spoke out,' he said about Zelensky, 'that deserves respect.' Then he fell silent again, looking at the screen, and added: 'But now we’re in trouble,'” Shuster wrote in his column.

The journalist added that after the drama unfolded in the White House, reactions in Kyiv mainly oscillated between two emotions: “pride for a leader who stood up to the world's greatest power, and fear about what consequences this will have for Ukraine and its army.”

One of Zelensky's advisors told Shuster that the president had no choice but to respond in the White House to Trump's words.

“If someone is wiping their feet on you, do you just have to endure it?” he stated.

The column also mentioned that for many Ukrainians, Zelensky was right: “In the Oval Office and on Fox News, he spoke with all the conviction and self-respect that his citizens have come to expect from their leader.”

“He has long integrated their collective pain and anger over the Russian invasion and has become a true master at turning those emotions into a message for the world,” Shuster noted.

The head of the Mykolaiv region, Vitaliy Kim commented on the dispute between President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump, which occurred during a meeting at the White House on Friday, February 28.
