96% of Kinburn Spit has been destroyed by fire, according to the prosecutor's office

In Mykolaiv region, prosecutors have recorded damage amounting to nearly 300 billion UAH caused to the objects of Ukraine's nature reserve fund as a result of the armed aggression by the Russian Federation.

This information was reported by the Mykolaiv regional prosecutor's office.

Members of the working group, in collaboration with the prosecutor's office, have developed a procedure for applying the Berkeley Protocol to document damage and losses from fires in the territory of the National Nature Park "Sviatoslav's White Shore," the Regional Landscape Park "Kinburn Spit," and the Black Sea Biosphere Reserve during 2022–2023.

As a result of the military aggression by the Russian Federation, the territory of the Kinburn Peninsula has suffered devastating consequences due to hostilities — 96% of its land area has been destroyed by fire. Specifically:

- within the Regional Landscape Park "Kinburn Spit," fires have destroyed 602.1 hectares of forests and other vegetation;

- within the Black Sea Biosphere Reserve – 121.7 hectares;

- within the National Nature Park "Sviatoslav's White Shore" - 6865.6 hectares.

Based on the collaborative efforts of the prosecutor's office, the State Environmental Inspectorate, commission members, and with the active participation of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, the extent of damage caused by air pollution due to emissions of pollutants on land plots has been calculated. The total amount of damage reached approximately 300 billion UAH.

The collected materials, along with the act of documenting the harm and calculations of losses, have been sent to an expert institution as part of a criminal proceeding under part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for further use as evidence of the losses inflicted by Russian armed formations.
