A mother of multiple children from the Mykolaiv region, who underwent a lung transplant, has passed away in the hospital.
35-year-old Margarita Smelyanets from the Mykolaiv region, who received a lung transplant in December 2024, died in the hospital.
This information was confirmed by the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
"During this time, Margarita became not just a patient to the entire staff, but also a beloved person. We are all profoundly saddened," said representatives from the Heart Institute.
Margarita Smelyanets had an unfortunate incident in 2018 when she sneezed, which caused tissue in one of her lungs to rupture. This marked the beginning of her treatment.
Later on, Margarita contracted a fungus that was discovered too late. Soon after, she was diagnosed with pneumothorax. The doctors then informed Margarita that only a lung transplant could save her. Previously, she mentioned that she received this news positively.
Margarita Smelyanets lived in a nursing home as she was unable to do anything on her own and required assistance. The last time she saw her five children was in 2021, and she missed them dearly.
Margarita waited for over 5 years for the life-saving operation and finally received it. On December 6, 2024, she underwent a lung transplant. Her donor was a 13-year-old boy from the Odesa region, who was diagnosed with acute cerebrovascular accident. His parents consented to the organ donation.
