Running away somewhere cold makes no sense: the mayor revealed how many people live in Mykolaiv

The mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Senkevych, shared the latest estimates of the city's population.

In his interview on the "Novyny Pryazov’ya" program, the mayor stated that Mykolaiv is one of the warmest cities in Ukraine, and therefore, in his opinion, people would not want to leave for colder places. He mentioned that the current population is nearly the same as before the full-scale invasion, with around 50,000 residents being internally displaced persons.

- Right now, we are recording this video at two in the afternoon, and the outside temperature is 8 degrees Celsius. This means that Mykolaiv is currently one of the warmest cities in Ukraine – running away somewhere cold... is unlikely to make sense. Before the war, Mykolaiv had about 480,000 officially registered residents. During the worst period of the war in August 2022, we had the lowest population, which was 230,000. Today, we have around 430,000 people, of which about 50,000 are officially registered internally displaced persons. During each governmental meeting, we receive this information. The last figures I recall are 48,000 internally displaced individuals. These are people from Mykolaiv region, Kherson region, and the city of Kherson itself. There are many people in Mykolaiv now, and the numbers I am sharing are not guesses; we calculate them based on the amount of waste collected, water usage, and mobile operator metrics, - the mayor explained.
