“You will be mine”: A man was tried in Mykolaiv for attempting to blow up his ex-wife

A man was tried in Mykolaiv after he, under the influence of alcohol, brought a grenade into his ex-wife's home and threw it at her. As a result of the explosion, the woman sustained bodily injuries.

The court's verdict was announced on January 20 and subsequently published in the Unified State Register of Court Decisions.

This incident occurred on January 8, 2023. According to the case materials, the defendant was living in the same house with the victim and her two sons at the time, but the woman had ended their relationship due to the man's alcohol addiction. It is noted that after the breakup, the defendant repeatedly threatened his ex-civil wife and showed her the grenade, saying: “Let’s go to the garden, we’ll fly together so as not to disturb the children. You will be mine.”

On January 8, the man returned home while the victim and her two sons were in one of the bedrooms. The house had no electricity due to scheduled outages, so a candle was lit in the room. The man, inebriated, began arguing with his ex-wife and, without any reason, started apologizing to her sons. After that, he sat down next to his ex-wife’s feet holding the grenade and pulled the pin. The woman noticed this and tried to lead the children out of the room, but her ex-husband threw the grenade, resulting in an explosion.

As a result of the explosion, both the victim and the defendant sustained serious bodily injuries.

During the court hearings, the defendant claimed that he did not intend to kill his ex-wife but wanted to commit suicide. However, he stated that due to carelessness, he tripped and dropped the grenade after pulling the pin.

It is noted that in addition to this grenade, the man kept several other munitions that he had found in the Mykolaiv region.

The court sentenced the defendant to 7 years in prison.
