It has been revealed how many civilians have died as a result of the war in Ukraine

Since February 2022, due to Russian aggression against Ukraine, 12,605 civilians have lost their lives, and another 29,178 have been injured.

This information is stated in the report by the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission.

The report indicates that the majority of civilian casualties (89%) and damage to educational and medical facilities (93%) occurred in areas controlled by Ukraine.

The highest number of casualties in January was caused by short-range drones, including FVP drones, which had a greater impact than any other weapon. Specifically, in the Ukrainian-controlled part of the Kherson region, 70% of the casualties were due to such drones. Several shellings in Zaporizhzhia on January 8, 18, and 23 resulted in a high number of civilian casualties (17 dead; 176 injured), which also contributed to the overall increase in casualties in January, the UN mission clarified.

"The majority of casualties (81%) occurred near the line of confrontation, primarily in the Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, and Donetsk regions." , - noted the UN.

The report highlights that the actual scale of damage inflicted on civilians—both casualties and infrastructure damage—is likely much higher, as many data cannot be verified due to the large number of reports and lack of access to the affected areas.

"The number of civilian casualties is likely particularly understated in cities such as Mariupol (Donetsk region), Lysychansk, Popasna, and Severodonetsk (Luhansk region), where intense hostilities continued at the beginning of the full-scale invasion,” - states the document.
