The Mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Senkevych, commented on the controversial construction of a sports facility in the protected area of "Flotsky Boulevard," stating that such facilities should be available in every district of Mykolaiv.
He made this statement during the broadcast of the program "Dialogue."
According to the mayor, the main dissatisfaction of residents stemmed from the removal of the fertile soil layer in the protected area of "Flotsky Boulevard" for the construction of the sports facility. He emphasized that nothing grows on this fertile soil layer.
- "There is a lot of 'hate' regarding the removal of the fertile soil layer in this area. Yes, there is fertile soil there, but nothing grows on it. Nearby, we can see plenty of fertile soil where not even grass grows," said Oleksandr Senkevych.
The mayor noted that there are questions regarding the construction of the sports facility for the municipal enterprise "Mykolaiv Parks."
- "There are also questions for the 'Parks' enterprise, such as: documentation preparation, approvals, and so on. They had their own problems there. A criminal case was opened, and they were sorting it out, but it seems they have resolved it now. Everything appears to be in order," the mayor stated.
Additionally, the mayor mentioned that he recently had a personal meeting with a teacher who complained to him about being unable to afford classes at a private gym due to her low salary. This led to the idea of creating sports facilities that would compete with private gyms.
- "Recently, I had a personal meeting with a teacher who asked me: 'Do you know our salary?' I replied, 'Well, I have an idea.' She then asked, 'Do you know how much it costs to attend a decent gym in Mykolaiv?' I said, 'I know that too.' And she responded, 'So how can we afford it? We're people too; we want this as well. Create some conditions for us.' We discussed this, and we are currently working with the sports department. I want to say that we aim to organize accessible sports facilities in every district where adults and people with special social status can train. This will create a small competition for private gyms and provide opportunities for socially vulnerable groups to engage in sports," Oleksandr Senkevych explained.
Furthermore, he listed locations where sports facilities may appear in the future:
- "My personal position is that such facilities should be in every district: near the 'Strelka' beach, in Namyv, in the Ship district at 'Chaika' beach, somewhere near the oil depot in the Ingul district, and in the 'Yunost' park. This way, young people and older adults can come and engage in sports. Scientists say that physical activity strengthens not only the body but also the mind," the mayor concluded.
Later, work resumed on the Upper Embankment, but this time with the necessary documents in place. How the construction permit was obtained in a protected area remains unanswered.
In November, the controversial sports facility in the protected area of Flotsky Boulevard was officially opened in Mykolaiv.
