The city authorities will now be obliged to consider it
A petition calling for the preservation of the historical fence of Baikove Cemetery, published on the Kyiv City Council website, has gathered over 6,000 votes.
As noted by the petition's author, Kyiv heritage protection expert Dmytro Perov, the fence is a cultural heritage site.
“The fence that separates the cemetery from the city was built here between 1876 and 1909, when the large cemetery was finally divided into two parts – old and new. Since then, the red framing of the historical fence has become one of the symbols of this place, tied to the memories of those buried here in the hearts of Kyivans,” the petition states.
However, work has recently begun to replace the authentic cemetery fence with a new one made of concrete and clinker bricks. According to Perov, the wrought iron grates, decorative elements, symbolic sculptures, and inscriptions integrated into the columns of the historical brick enclosure and brick portals are now under threat.
“We risk losing all of this, as the capital repairs planned by the cemetery management do not include restoration work. Therefore, the fence will be dismantled and replaced with a new one, as has already happened at the foot of Baikova Hill. This must not be allowed! We urge the city authorities to halt the demolition of the historical fence and develop a project for the restoration and preservation of this unique historical site,” the petition calls.
