UN Mandate Mission: EU Proposes Monitoring Ceasefire in Ukraine

The head of the EU Military Committee, General Robert Brieger, suggested that a UN mission comprised of soldiers from various countries could oversee the ceasefire in Ukraine. He believes the mission could include not only soldiers from the EU but also military personnel from the Global South or the Caucasus.

This was reported by Die Welt.

“A UN-mandated mission is possible, which would include not only Europeans but also soldiers from the Global South or, for instance, the Caucasus. EU soldiers could undoubtedly make a significant contribution,” – the general believes.

According to him, EU countries could, for example, provide substantial forces for monitoring the ceasefire. However, overseeing the demilitarized zone along the front would require, in his estimation, a military presence “in the high five-digit range.”

"This means that they would also have the right to implement the ceasefire using weapons and support from the air,” - he added.

Brieger emphasized that "while all of this sounds very theoretical," it "could become a reality."

The head of the EU Military Committee considers US President Donald Trump's plan to quickly end the war in Ukraine as "unlikely."

“Simply put, this (Trump's plan – ed.) would provide an advantage to end the deaths. The downside, however, would be that the conflict would continue and, in the worst-case scenario, last for decades, for example, like the one between North and South Korea,” – Brieger noted.
