The Ministry of Defense strengthens language policy in the army
The Ministry of Defense is working on promoting the Ukrainian language among military personnel. During a meeting between Deputy Minister Serhiy Melnyk and Language Ombudsman Taras Kremin, the parties agreed to cooperate in spreading the state language within the armed forces.
On Tuesday, February 11, the press service reported this from the Ministry of Defense.
"In the defense system, the Ukrainian language is used officially 100%. However, in informal communication, defenders sometimes use Russian words. This, in particular, is a consequence of more than three hundred years of Russification in the country. We fully recognize the importance of the Ukrainian language not only in terms of adhering to the language law but also in everyday life," – noted Melnyk.
For his part, Kremin emphasized that in the context of the Russo-Ukrainian war, the state language has become a key marker of "us versus them," allowing for the rapid identification and elimination of the enemy.
"To strengthen national priorities, enhance unity, and engage in the struggle, it is crucial to strictly adhere to existing legislation, utilize the state language, and set an example of respect for the defining factor and main sign of national identity. With an extensive network of educational institutions, language courses, and state and local language programs, we are all, overcoming the consequences of the assimilatory policies of colonizers, reinforcing the power of the Ukrainian word, ensuring the full functioning of the state language in all areas of public life, and strengthening the unity of our Ukraine," – emphasized Taras Kremin.
