The mayor explained why heating is turned off in Mykolaiv along with the electricity
The mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Senkevych, outlined the main reasons why residents face heating issues when there is no electricity.
He discussed this during an interview on the program "Novyny Pryazov’ya."
The mayor explained that heating in Mykolaiv is provided by two companies: "Mykolaivoblteploenergo" and "Mykolaiv TPP," which heat water to the required temperature in their boilers and then circulate the hot water through pipes using pumps. However, during power outages, these pumps stop working. To restart them, a generator must be connected.
- It is essential to understand that heating in Mykolaiv relies on heated water. We have two heat supply organizations: our municipal enterprise "Mykolaivoblteploenergo" and "Mykolaiv TPP." They heat this water in their boilers and transport it throughout the city. This transportation relies on electric pumps. These electric pumps push the hot water. Of course, when the electricity is cut off, these transporting pumps do not operate. For them to function, people need to come and connect diesel generators, refuel them. Therefore, there is a drop in temperature, but it’s not that heating is entirely shut off. The system will simply freeze. There was a drop in temperature since diesel generators cannot operate 24 hours a day. They need to be turned off to function properly, - said Oleksandr Senkevych.
He also emphasized that there is currently a staffing issue at the enterprises. To ensure the generator operates smoothly, someone must monitor it, refuel it, and turn it off on time to allow for brief breaks. The number of specialists at the enterprise has significantly decreased, as male workers are subject to mobilization.
- The second problem is the limited number of people who can service all these infrastructure facilities. The actual number of maintenance personnel has decreased. The workers at our municipal enterprises, like everyone else, are subject to mobilization, at least half of them. As a result, some experienced employees who could do this more quickly and efficiently are now serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. They are protecting Mykolaiv residents not from the cold, but from the Russians, - the mayor stated.
At the same time, the mayor assured that even during power outages in freezing temperatures, Mykolaiv residents would not freeze.
- They will not freeze. We cannot allow that to happen. First and foremost, we care about people, and secondly, if the system freezes, we will never be able to restart heating properly, - concluded Oleksandr Senkevych.
