As part of the efforts to mitigate the consequences of the enemy attack that caused an oil spill in the Southern Bug in Mykolaiv, over 100 tons have already been pumped out, and the main oil extraction activities are expected to continue for about another 10 days.
This was reported by Roman Voznyak, the head of the Department of Emergency Situations and Civil Protection of the Mykolaiv City Council, during a broadcast on "Suspilne."
According to him, specialists from the State Emergency Service, the Department of Emergency Situations and Civil Protection of the city council, and the enterprise itself are involved in the comprehensive work.
- According to our estimates, the main work is expected to be completed in approximately 10 days. After that, measures will be taken to collect remaining oil using sorbent materials and to clean the area around the pollution site, - said Roman Voznyak.
At the same time, the completion of the planned work is influenced by the weather, the official noted. If the air temperature drops, the timelines for completion may change, as the speed of oil extraction is directly dependent on it.
Roman Voznyak reminded that, according to preliminary calculations by the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the estimated amount of damage is 45 billion UAH. However, the oil spill has not led to the death of any animals.
- To date, there have been no recorded deaths of aquatic bioresources, birds, or domestic animals, - said the head of the department.
Additionally, samples of water from the Bug Estuary in Mykolaiv, where thousands of tons of vegetable oil spilled, have been analyzed.
