The State Consumer Protection Service of Mykolaiv has reminded that selling certain items in schools is prohibited: even ice cream is banned.

School cafeterias are not allowed to sell ice cream, cream-filled products, canned goods, and drinks with added sugar.

This was reiterated by the main department of the State Consumer Protection Service in Mykolaiv region.

“The school cafeteria is a place where children can have a snack during breaks between classes. However, not all products can be sold in school cafeterias, as outlined in Appendix 10 of the Sanitary Regulations for general and secondary education institutions, approved by the order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine dated September 25, 2020, No. 2205. Therefore, it is important to remind school administrators about which products are not suitable for school cafeterias,” the statement said.

Here is a list of food products that are prohibited from being sold in school cafeterias and vending machines located in educational institutions:

* Confectionery, sweet cereal products with sugar content exceeding 10 g per 100 g of the finished product;

* Cream-filled products, ice cream, food concentrates;

* Meat products from industrial and culinary production;

* Fish products from industrial and culinary production;

* Products (including snacks) with sodium content exceeding 0.12 g or an equivalent amount of salt per 100 g of the finished product and/or with sugar content exceeding 10 g per 100 g of the finished product (except for products (including snacks) containing sugar or sweeteners) and/or synthetic colorants and flavorings (except for vanillin, ethylvanillin, and vanilla extract), sweeteners, flavor enhancers, preservatives;

* Products containing partially hydrogenated vegetable fats (trans fats);

* Unpasteurized milk and dairy products made from unpasteurized milk;

* Unpasteurized juices, juices with added sugars and sweeteners;

* Fish, meat, vegetable, and other canned goods from industrial production, except for pasteurized juices from industrial production without added sugars and sweeteners;

* Carbonated drinks, particularly sweet carbonated beverages and energy drinks;

* Coffee and coffee drinks;

* Mushrooms;

* Homemade products.

The following food products are recommended to be included in the assortment of cafeterias located in educational institutions:

* Sandwiches with hard cheese, eggs, butter, processed legumes, nuts, seeds.

* Bakery products, baked flour products with sour milk cheese, eggs, processed legume products, fresh or processed fruits or vegetables, nuts, or seeds without added salt;

* Salads in portion packaging, prepared on the day of consumption;

* Fermented dairy products: yogurt, kefir, ryazhenka, sour milk cheese (industrial production, without sweeteners, sugars, and colorants, with an indicated shelf life on the packaging) or products based on soy, rice, oats, nuts, or almonds;

* Pasteurized fruit and vegetable juices, non-carbonated drinking water, locally made beverages (tea, compote) without sugars and sweeteners;

* Dried vegetables, fruits, and berries, nuts, seeds (without added sugars and sweeteners, without salt and fat; cleaned and packaged in separate packaging weighing no more than 50 g).

Responsibility for the implementation of regulatory legal documents governing the organization of children's nutrition in general educational institutions rests with the heads of these institutions.
