The case of former head of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration, Mykola Romanchuk, will be reviewed again, - media reports
Starting from January 2025, hearings on the case of Mykola Romanchuk, the former deputy head of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration, are set to resume.
This was reported by “Nikcenter”.
In 2016, former deputy head Mykola Romanchuk was arrested during a bribery handover.
This was a high-profile corruption case in the Mykolaiv region. However, it has been under judicial review for over five years. The defendant has not admitted his guilt and claimed that the case was fabricated. According to Mykola Romanchuk, the military prosecutor's office fabricated the case after he denied the institution permission for the illegal use of land in Shirlana.
Initially, the defendant faced imprisonment from 8 to 12 years with asset confiscation. However, during the trial, the prosecution significantly softened the charges, demanding a fine of 1,500 untaxed minimum wages for the former deputy head of the Regional State Administration.
Ultimately, Mykola Romanchuk did not receive even that punishment. The Central District Court of Mykolaiv acquitted the official, returning his bail and confiscated property. This occurred in 2021. Since then, the military prosecutor's office has been contesting the verdict. Although the appeal was accepted, the Supreme Court ordered a new review of the case. According to the registry, hearings in the appellate court are expected to resume in January 2025. Nevertheless, the case has already lasted nine years without a fair verdict.
Mykola Romanchuk headed the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration from March to July 2014. On July 28, he was appointed as the first deputy head of the regional state administration (at that time, it was Vadim Merikov). He was suspended from his position on June 3, 2016, following his arrest for receiving a bribe.
