During its use, this unique item has suffered damage
The National Reserve "Kiev-Pechersk Lavra" is starting preparatory work for the restoration of the large iconostasis of the Assumption Cathedral, as the sacred relic has incurred significant damage over the past 25 years.
This was reported by the press service of the reserve.
Experts noted that their main concerns include the peeling of the plaster along with the gilding, the deterioration of the paint layer, and potential deformations of the wooden base.
To determine the exact scope of work, the reserve's restorers plan to use construction scaffolding, which will allow them to inspect the condition of the upper parts of the iconostasis.
“We observe significant damage to the lower elements, but without a detailed examination of the upper part of the iconostasis, it is difficult to assess the full extent of the restoration work,” stated Igor Tereshchenko, Deputy General Director for Infrastructure Development, Improvement, and Recreation.
Reminder, the National Reserve "Saint Sophia of Kyiv" invites those interested to view the unique ancient graffiti on the walls of the cathedral.
