The prosecution has prevented the illegal sale of an artifact from the time of the Marcomannic wars of Rome, which took place in the 2nd century.
Law enforcement successfully thwarted the illegal sale and seized a rare artifact that holds exceptional historical and cultural significance.
This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.
A representative from the National Museum of History of Ukraine discovered that a resident of Odesa attempted to sell a unique fibula from the 1st-2nd century on an online auction, characteristic of the Germanic cultures of Central Europe and related to the Marcomannic wars of the Roman Empire. He informed the prosecution about this fact.
According to his information, a lot titled “Golden Merovingian Fibula 18.6 grams double-plate” was listed on one of the online auction sites with a starting price of 170,000 hryvnias.
During operational measures, law enforcement identified the seller and seized the fibula. An art examination has been commissioned to confirm its authenticity and cultural value. Once the research is completed, the valuable artifact will be transferred to the collections of the National Museum of History of Ukraine for further storage and study.
The pre-trial investigation is ongoing within the framework of a criminal proceeding regarding the illegal appropriation of found or someone else's property that accidentally came into possession of an individual.
