Documentary films about the war in Ukraine, "Porcelain War" and "Once Upon a Time in Ukraine," have made it to the shortlist of nominees for the 97th Academy Awards by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The film "Porcelain War" will compete in the category of "Documentary Feature," having been selected as one of 15 works on this shortlist, according to a press release from the Academy.
This film was directed by Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontiev. The production of "Porcelain War" involved film professionals from the USA, Ukraine, and Australia. Slava Leontiev also appears in the film.
The film tells the story of three Ukrainian artists – Slava Leontiev, his wife Anya Stasenko, and their friend Andriy Stefanov. Following the full-scale Russian invasion of 2022, they remained in Kharkiv under constant rocket strikes. Slava Leontiev serves in the military, and the three artists fight against the enemy through art, creating porcelain pieces and decorating destroyed buildings with them.
Another documentary about the war in Ukraine is "Once Upon a Time in Ukraine." This film falls under the category of "Documentary Short Film."
Directors Betsy West and Earl Mack tell the story of the war in Ukraine through the eyes of children.
Voting for the winners in these categories will begin on January 8 and conclude on January 12. The nominees for the award ceremony will be announced on January 17. The main ceremony will take place on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
