U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has accused Panama of charging excessive fees for the use of the Panama Canal. The Republican stated that if the country does not manage the canal appropriately, he will demand its transfer.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine referencing Hindustan Times.
"The fees imposed by Panama are ridiculous, especially considering the extraordinary generosity shown to Panama by the United States," Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.
He also warned that he would not allow the canal to fall into "the wrong hands." The publication notes that Trump seemingly warned about the potential influence of China over the passage, stating that the canal should not be managed by (China).
"It was not given for the benefit of others, but merely as a gesture of cooperation between us and Panama. If the principles, both moral and legal, of this generous act of gifting are not adhered to, we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to us in full and without question," he concluded.
Hindustan Times reminded that the United States significantly constructed and managed the area around the passage for decades. However, in 1999, the U.S. government fully transferred control of the canal to Panama after a period of joint management.
It is worth noting that recently Trump threatened the EU. He stated that EU member countries must purchase more oil and gas from the U.S. Otherwise, tariffs will be raised.
"I told the European Union that they must compensate for their massive deficit with the United States by purchasing large quantities of our oil and gas. Otherwise, it will be TARIFFS forever!!!," he wrote on his Truth Social platform.
